Legacy giving
The Stephen Joseph Theatre is a cultural icon of the Yorkshire region, providing the highest possible standard of theatrical experience for audiences worldwide since 1955. Widely known for its world premieres of Alan Ayckbourn's 75+ plays, the SJT also has a reputation for new writing, its ensemble of actors and the musical adaptations of Artistic Director Chris Monks.
SJT OutReach work closely with the local community, especially with young people. OutReach work with North Yorkshire schools, host a thriving Youth Theatre, run a wide range of workshops for all ages, as well as running specific projects for disabled and disadvantaged groups.
But in all areas we dream of doing more and the loyal support of our audience is invaluable.
If you feel as passionate as we do that future generations can enjoy the highest possible standard of theatrical entertainment, please consider supporting us in your Will. However large or small your gift, it will be gratefully received and put to good use. If you wish your gift to be used for a specific area of work then we would be pleased to discuss this with you.
Leaving a legacy
You can include the SJT in your Will by directing your gift to Scarborough Theatre Trust Ltd, registered charity number 253606. The process is simple but you should seek advice from an independent professional.
Although the SJT cannot give legal advice, we can answer questions or provide further information via email, phone or in person – see the contact details at the end of this leaflet.
For the convenience of your legal adviser, the following wording might be useful for different kinds of legacy:
Pecuniary Legacy – A fixed sum of money decided by you.
I give to Scarborough Theatre Trust Ltd, registered charity number 253606,of Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1JW (hereinafter called the SJT), the sum of (£ amount in words) and I direct that the proceeds may be used for the general purposes of the SJT and a receipt signed by a person for the time being authorised by the SJT shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.
Residuary Legacy – A gift of the remainder or a percentage of your estate after all debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid.
I give to Scarborough Theatre Trust Ltd, registered charity number 253606, of Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1JW (hereinafter called the SJT), all / a share of (please state percentage) of my estate absolutely and I direct that the proceeds may be used for the general purposes of the SJT and a receipt signed by a person for the time being authorised by the SJT shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.
If you would like to support a specific area of work then the easiest way is to include a letter with your will expressing your wishes and the SJT will endeavour to follow this as closely as possible. It would be helpful if the clause in your Will remains 'the proceeds may be used for the general purposes of the SJT' in case the specific need no longer exists at the time we receive your gift.
As the SJT is a charity any legacy you leave us will be exempt from inheritance tax, which will reduce the tax that is paid on your estate. You should consult your professional adviser on this issue.
