The Art of Persuasion

“How much persuasive capital can there be in a photograph? Well, quite a lot in this play's insight into the under belly of political intrigue.

An incriminating image gets into circulation among MPs and journalists and farce ensues. The picture is the medium for political manipulation and its distribution is the source of dialogue that informs us of how the minds of the political thinkers must work.

The genuineness of the photograph is never questioned, but the genuineness of those that use it most certainly are, making this a fascinating romp through the short-term world of politics - much shorter than the lasting memory a photograph gives.

Philosophy and the Art of Persuasion leaves a lasting image with the audience who will, I'm sure, relish the thought of more plays from talented new playwright Roger Osborne to come.”

The Knicker Lady

“She was brilliant. If you missed her you missed a excellent evening full of laughter.”

The Price

“Please tell the cast of The Price how much my wife and I enjoyed the performance at the matinee of 28th April. I consider that the cast gave what can only be described as a Master Class in acting which was a privilege to see.

I do wonder how the cast can rise to this level even in a matinee performance and indicates the height of professionalism which surpassed even that which we have come to expect of the level at the SJT.

What a privilege it was to see such a cast at work!”

Bus Stop

“Back living the area after quite a few years away it was a delight to be able to 'pop' into the SJT. The quality of performance was as we expected excellent.

One criticism - I know this is a period play but the smoking added nothing dramatically and reminded me why I avoided public performances before the smoking ban. They didn't need to actually smoke (the smell is the problem) and they are, after all, acting.

A well performed play - but oh the familiar taint of old tabacco.”

Bus Stop

“Brilliant, the characters drew you in and we wanted to know more like nosey voyeurs. The acting is captivating. The atmosphere was created to keep you asking. The late 50s era is illustrated absolutely along with the naivety of youngesters compared to the learned natural needs of the older person.

We are still raving about it the night after we saw it at the brilliant SJT scarborough.”

Eyes Front! With Isla St Clair

“A splendid show!

I'd just returned from several days in Flanders and the Somme WW1 battlfields and cemeteries, the horrors of which were still fresh in my mind.

This show was cleverly contrived and smoothly executed, with Patrick King's well researched archive footage of wars including the Boer War, WW1 and WW2, interspersed with songs from Isla St Clair.

The importance of the role of pipers in inspiring and encouraging soldiers into battle is legendary, and was covered in both film and songs.

Isla's renditions of 'A Scottish Soldier' and 'D-Day Dodgers' were superb, and very thought provoking.

Isla has a beautiful clear voice, well suited to the songs that she sang, and she has lost none of the informal charm which made her a household name in the 1970s before she left the limelight to raise a family.

All in all, a splendid show!

Communicating Doors/Mikado

“We came all the way up from St Albans last week to see "Communicating Doors" one night and "The Mikado" the next. The theatre is wonderfully intimate as we knew from a previous visit two years ago and both productions were absolutely first-class. It is such a pleasure to come to the SJT. We normally go down to London to see plays but if we lived nearer Scarborough this would be our theatre of choice. It is extraordinary in our experience how every single member of staff is so enthusiastic and genuinely wants to help. We continue to extol the plays and to tell our friends what a great theatre you have.”

Communicating Doors - Alan Ayckbourn

“A thoroughly enjoyable evening - a great meal in the restaurant, followed by a memorable production. Plenty of sharp intakes of breath combined with chuckles and guffaws as the audience strove to follow the twists of the classic Ayckbourn plot.

Who could ask for anythihng better?”

From Sarah Gee on 09/08/2010

A Number --Caryl Churchill

A Midsummer Night's Dream

“My wife and I had a wonderful afternoon at the SJT this last week. This was our first visit and definitely will not be our last.
We were met at the reception by a charming young lady who could not do enough to help. Everything at the theatre appeared to work like clockwork in the beautiful surroundings.
The production was tip top and in my opinion could not have been performed any better.

We could not stop talking about the afternoon we were so impressed by the experience.

Thanks to every one from the receptionist, the young assistants to the lead actor.

Frank and Andria Taylor
