The Stephen Joseph Theatre produces and programmes bold, relevant and surprising theatre that inspires and entertains.
We believe that audiences are keen to see the broadest range of stories told on our stages and so we are keen to present as diverse a range of work as possible and we actively promote the creative case for diversity across our programme.
The SJT presents its own work for a number of months of the year across two spaces, The Round (404 seats) and The Mac (165 seats). The rest of the time we are proud to curate the best work from our touring partners and we welcome applications from a breadth of companies including theatre, dance, music and comedy.

The Round
The whole concept of in-the-round theatre was conceived by Stephen Joseph here in Scarborough. The Round, designed by Alan Ayckbourn, seats 404 in its traditional configuration. The Round is however, flexible, and we can present work in thrust (capacity approx. 280) or end-on (capacity approx. 237) configurations. We can also accommodate traverse performances and can add cabaret seating onstage for certain performances.
The McCarthy
The McCarthy is a 165-seater space in a fixed end-on configuration which can also be used for cinema screenings.
