Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory presents Henry V.

'I think the king is but a man.'

A divided nation. Trouble on the continent. An ambitious young prince.

Emerging from his wild youth with a sense of purpose and adventure, Henry V wages war on France with devastating efficiency. But at what cost? How can he be a good leader and a good man? What compromises must be made in the name of victory?

Shakespeare’s play is a thrilling examination of the nature of power, exploring the burden of leadership and exploding the myth of heroism. It depicts the powerful and the powerless fighting side by side, a democratic portrayal of the ruler and the ruled. Henry V compels us to examine our place in the world and our complex relationship with patriotism. Above all it speaks of the moral responsibility of our leaders and ourselves: ‘Every subject’s duty is the king’s, but every subject’s soul is his own.’

★★★★ The Guardian
‘A fine, deeply thoughtful production, which raises the question of what war does to its victors as much as to its victims’

★★★★ The Times and The Sunday Times
‘The most intelligent, compelling and pertinent Shakespeare production I have seen for some time. A real accomplishment’

★★★★ The Times and The Sunday Times
‘Presented by the Bristol-based company Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory with a drum-tight ensemble, it’s a deft and timely portrayal of a divided nation forced to rally behind an uncertain leader… moment after moment pierces and startles’

★★★★ Bristol.Live
‘Crisply acted with rewarding innovations … a cast without fault’

★★★★ BroadwayWorld UK
‘Like the English at Agincourt, Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory aren’t unshaken, but they are victorious’

★★★★ Playstosee.com
‘The dazzling cast produce a captivating performance of the history play than can be followed by both the Shakespeare-savvy and newcomers alike’

★★★★ Inter:Mission
‘This kind of Shakespeare couldn’t be purer, presented as we are with the grief and rage and passion of our own times, as the bard mirrored his own’

★★★★ Stage Review
‘A bold and exhilarating production’

A word from the director:

"I’m so pleased to be working with stf on this production, digging in to this rich and exciting play. I’m particularly interested in how Shakespeare includes the whole of society on the Agincourt battlefield – kings, captains, soldiers and civilians – all given equal voice about these important issues. The questions Shakespeare raises about leadership and national identity are at the forefront of all our minds; it feels a good moment to interrogate those ideas." - Elizabeth Freestone on Henry V
