Winner of the Holden Street Theatres' Edinburgh Fringe Award, Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre Award 2019 and The Sunday Mail’s Best Female Solo Show, Build a Rocket is a powerful and uplifting play about triumph over adversity.
Yasmin is a bright 16-year-old from a small seaside town. In an instant, her world is turned upside down when she becomes pregnant with her son, Jack. Suddenly her life isn't sandcastles, arcades, and donkey rides.
Abandoned by both the father of her child and her alcoholic mother, Yasmin faces one of life's great challenges completely alone - but can the thing which threatens to ruin her life actually be the thing which saves her?
"A breathless, swaggering hour of female endurance and defiance” (★★★★ The Telegraph), this play challenges our perceptions about young motherhood in this brilliant, funny, and heart-warming production.
“Manteghi delivers what will surely be one of the best performances to be witnessed this Fringe”
“Delivered with pedal-to-the-metal conviction”
“A powerful one-woman show and a tour-de-force from Serena Manteghi whose performance blazes off the stage”
Build A Rocket was made possible thanks to the support from SJT Script Development Fund donors. The play was first presented at the SJT as part of our playreading programme in 2017 and went on to be performed at the SJT, Latitude Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe and the Caledonian Express festival at the Pleasance Theatre, London in 2018 and at the Adelaide Fringe in Spring 2019.
