Smoking and No Smoking are two films based on Alan Ayckbourn’s play, Intimate Exchanges. The play and films deal with consequences of choice and how lives can take very different paths from the smallest to the biggest decision.

The play has eight significantly different plots dependent on the choices made and the films adapt six of these plots - three for each film - as we see the five female characters (all played by Sabine Azéma) and the four male characters (all played by Pierre Arditi) skillfully recapping what might have happened if they had made or failed to make certain choices and how their lives could have been widly different. For example, No Smoking focuses chiefly on the relationship between the mild-mannered Miles Coombes and his infinitely more aggressive and ambitious wife, Rowena.

The two films will be screened seperately. You can choose to see either of the films or both but you don’t have to see both for it to make sense. Make a choice. See one, but which one? Or both? You’ll enjoy it either way.

Screened in French with English Subtitles.
