Exciting news for the SJT!

The SJT has been awarded a grant from Arts Council England for developments to the theatre. Chief Executive Steve Freeman says:

“The capital grant will enable us to enhance our customer experience enormously. The Stephen Joseph Theatre has been in its current venue for 21 years now, and we’re very aware that it needs some refurbishment. We want to provide a 21st century theatre-going experience for audiences both new and existing. Our ongoing vision will be to complement the unique period features of this building whilst looking to the future.”

The project will include an improved passenger lift and wheelchair platform, a new, environmentally-friendly LED lighting system in the Round and other work to make the theatre more welcoming and accessible.

The theatre’s Development Trust will shortly be launching a fund-raising campaign to secure the necessary match-funding for the project. We welcome discussions with anyone locally who has ideas or thoughts on ways to reach our target.

More details of the project, and how you can help, will be coming soon, watch this space (or join our email list to hear all about it first!)

How can you support the SJT?

The Stephen Joseph Theatre brings entertainment to thousands of people every year through our produced work, visiting productions as well as films and live streaming. The SJT is known for its commitment to new writing, and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names.

We run an extensive programme of OutReach work, encouraging everyone in our community to get creative through a variety of projects and regular classes for all ages. Our iconic Art Deco, Grade II listed building has a continual scheme of maintenance to ensure it remains a wonderful place for future generations to enjoy.
