Over the next couple of years, we’re aiming to make big changes that will benefit everyone and ensure that the SJT continues to be your theatre, but better.
We want everyone to have easy access to their theatre, and a fantastic time while they’re here. New lifts will help everyone to get around more easily. We need to upgrade our existing facilities for those with hearing difficulties, including a new hearing loop system.
We want the SJT to be a theatre where everyone feels welcome and at home. Opening up part of our building to look onto the street, installing new and more practical flooring, and improving our decor and lighting will give the foyer a fresher, more modern feel.
A new LED lighting system in the Round will lower our energy consumption (and bills!), reduce our carbon footprint and give a more vibrant customer experience. We are proud custodians of this iconic 1936 Odeon building and we want to be sure it’s properly maintained for future generations.
We understand that when you make a charitable donation, you want to know exactly where your money is going and our pledge is to be clear and transparent when it comes to spending your contributions. Every donation we receive will directly help to support the work of the Stephen Joseph Theatre both on the stage and in the local community, or through the transformative building work urgently needed to ensure we continue being good custodians of our beautiful Art Deco building.
There are many ways in which our loyal and dedicated audience can donate to our work. Many of these are ring-fenced to directly support a specific fund and no other area. Other, general, donations will be unrestricted gifts and directed where our need is greatest.
Transforming the SJT will be a phased project with the most urgent tranches of work in the first construction period set for early 2018. This will then be followed by further periods of construction over the next 18 to 24 months until all of the planned work is completed.
All funds for the development project are being raised and managed by the Scarborough Theatre Development Trust, the leaseholders of the Stephen Joseph Theatre building. Your donation will go directly to the Trust, enabling this transformative project.
